Minutes of the Quarterly General Meeting

January 2006

The Quarterly General Meeting went off very well with 22 members present, Mr. Malcolm Jarrett read the Commando Prayer and afterwards we observed a minutes silence for those who have Crossed the Bar including Phil Sealy, Ron Holland, and Davy Haines.

The Chairman (Geoff Dunne) gave an address in which he told of the committee`s commitment to the association, and also outlined the Aims. The President (Col. David Watson) having now retired is hoping to take a far more active part in the Association. Amongst the correspondence (for which I thank you all) were letters from Chunkie Chambers who designs Christmas Cards etc. John Cook who is Vice Chairman of the Birmingham Nautical Club. www.nauticalclub.co.uk or E.Mail nauticalclub@lineone.net Also Mike Jeffries who has a very nice establishment in Birdwood Gloucester called The Kings Head.( you never know he might be good for a pint if you pop in. Royston Kear has moved to Spain and is now a member of the Alicante R.N.A.WHICH INCLUDES 11 Bootnecks. I`ll try and find out the address and where they meet. Rod Spinks makes rings(Commando) he advertises in the Globe and Laurel, but you can get him on Rodney.spinks1@ntlworld.com

Under A.O.B. Notice was given that some of the rules need changing which the committee will sort out, and put before the next Quarterly Meeting.

The main item was probably trips and functions, as regards a do, unfortunately for you guys that live up country the Dinner and Dance will be in Deal area this is mainly where the majority of members live, but to make it a kind of weekend affair, we are hoping we might be able to have a Service for Laying up of the old Standard. hopefully we can do this in July, we are also hoping to organise a coach trip somewhere like the Menin Gate at Ypes or even the Corps Museum, we will keep you informed.

The raffle was wonderful and raised £116.00 my thanks to all who donated and or contributed, also my thanks to Malcolm and Cath for the buffet most of which was eaten. Thanks also to the R.B.L. for the use of the club.

The Association has a commitment twice a year for the Turning of the Page in the Book of Remembrance. At Deal Hospital this is at 1100hrs on every Monday, and this year our turn is May and December all are welcome lets make this a good turn out.

A word in the House, a stroke of a Pen
the country disbanded a body of Men
with fighting finesse and fitness supreme
the créme de la créme wore the berets of Green.

Their training was tough, it had to be so
how to fight with a knife, how to kill with a blow
Solerno, Bardia, Dieppe, St. Nazaire, when impossible
odds, the Commandos were there.

Their raids so successful that Hitler said
"If captured, no prisoners - I want these men dead!
Too late he discovered his men were not keen
to Battle with those wearing berets of Green.

On D-Day Sword Beach they were to the fore
as they jumped from their boats and made for the Shore
their contempt for the Nazis was plain to be seen
for they wore not steel helmets but the berets of Green.

When it was over, the fighting no more
the first they disbanded the Green beret 'Corp'
who went back to their shire, their town, their Glen
a body of gentle self disciplined men.

Yet forty years on they still meet, it is said
to talk - toast their Queen, and remember their Dead
whos memorial stands at the foot of the Ben
where they trained for the right to be Green beret men.

For our Freedom of movement our freedom speech
to those who came after the gospel I preach
A word in the House, a stroke of the pen cannot
wipe out our debt to those Green beret men.
