My father Donald Pickett (born 1930 - died 1989) was a Royal Marine Commando on SS Engagement from September 1947 to July 1955. He was based at Deal, Eastney, Plymouth and was in Malaya where he fought with the Gurkas and has the Malayan Medal. He was also based in Hong Kong. Ganges October 1951-52. He was from Swansea. Please if anyone did serve with him or anyone has advice where I can get more information about his service I would be eternally grateful. Thank you. His daughter, Helen Pickett. :-)

Looking for a British soldier
To whom it may concern
I should like to ask you for your help regarding a WWII episode that I witnessed in 1944 as a German soldier during the Normandy landing.
In August or September of 1944 a comrade of mine, Herbert Schmidt, and myself found a wounded British soldier our age ( 19 at that time, I am born in 1925, thus 82 years of age now) in a Norman wood leaning against a tree. His legs were both wounded, he was wailing and he could not walk any more. He shouted to us: “Don’t kill me!” And we replied: “We won’t kill you!” We were all very scared of being killed. Then he sang the German national anthem composed by Haydn based on a poem by Ferdinand von Freiligrath. And we sang the British hymn “God save the King” in order to calm him. Then he said: “I am a flutist of the London Symphony Orchestra.” We answered: “We are also musicians!” He seemed to be glad about this.
Then we put him onto our bicycle and transported him to the nearest German military hospital where he was operated on. Unfortunately we never heard of him again.
Now I should very much like to find this British comrade and to invite him to my home near Avignon where I live as a pianist.
Would you be so kind as to help me finding this comrade?
Thank you very much in advance.
Yours faithfully,
Jochen Nubel

Hi all, firsly a big congrats to Jimmy Green, elected Chairman at the AGM, my apologies for not being there in person but it was unavoidable, I wish yoa successful and enjoyable tenure in the chair.

My brother (old git) just returned from the Falklands, their plane had to divert to Buenos Aires due to weather, and the immigration officer asked him if it was his first time in Argentina, to which nonchalantly replied....."wel Sir, I could answer that question but then I'd have to kill you!" On a more serious note....I know you had a great time Jim - let's hope you can do a write up o go on here and maybe some of your photo's (don't make them all of wildlife please! ;-)

Incidentally.....may I confirm that he picture with the caption stating 227 Troop the Kings Squad is indeed that troop - my Brother (od git) Jim is in it and I think he know's his own King Squad photo's.....so Bob (Harriman) you are mistaken me old chum, please send us your pic of your own toop in Kings Squad and we'll stick it up!

Cheers all.......

Nice site, found by browsing. There is an RMA branch here,in Toronto, but just a little too far for me to attend from my location. Good luck with your site and your aims.

The 25th anniversary of the Falklands campaign will be commemorated across 8,000 miles and five time zones, in London and the Falkland Islands on 17 June 2007.

This will be a high impact visual event on Horse Guards Parade and will include a traditional “Drumhead” ceremony.

This will be followed by a parade of veterans and their modern day service counterparts up The Mall to Buckingham Palace to witness a fly past of aircraft from the Falklands era as well as some of those flown by the same squadrons today.

Central to the event will be the personal recollections of veterans and Islanders as they tell their stories in their own words. Senior members of the Royal Family will attend, and it will be covered live by the BBC.

Space in the audience at Horse Guards Parade will be limited, and it is hoped that as many as possible of the campaign’s veterans will be able to attend. If demand for tickets is high they will be allocated in priority order:

(1) Holders of the South Atlantic Medal (1982) and war widows

(2)Other widows and families and

(3)Others, both civilian and military, who were associated with the conflict

The organisers will endeavour to ensure that as many South Atlantic Medal (1982) holders attend as possible. If necessary they will issue tickets to allow medal holders to march even if tickets are not available for their guests in the stands, however all ticket applications should be made as soon as possible to avoid disappointment.

Only those successful in their applications will receive notification from the Veterans Agency, and tickets will be sent out along with an information leaflet about the
event in late May 2007.

Please see the official Falklands 25 website at [www.falklands25.com] further details about commemorative events taking place 14-17 June 2007.
